Recently, Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) alongside Nigeria Institute of Food Science & Technology(NIFST) and SANO FOODS organized a day workshop at Akinerele Auditorium to promote Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato.

In her welcome address, the Ag. Director-General, FIIRO, Dr. (Mrs.) Yemisi Asagbra appreciated the guests and participants present, She disclosed that FIIRO has developed over 250 indigenous technologies that are readily available for commercialization. Dr. Asagbra added that institute has also carried out trainings on her tecchnologies to would-be entrepreneur in the country's  six-geographical zones but there was need to do  more as it would serve as eye opener opportunities to the participants most especially in the area of fabrication"

Dr. Solomon Afuape, the guest speaker expressed his gratitude as well as the unflinching support received from FIIRO in conjunction with the duo collaborators towards the achievement of the workshop. He explained  that sweet potato ranked among the most nutritional  food crops, rich in carbohydrates, Vitamin C because of his short maturity time (3 to 4 months) and ability to grow under diverse climatic conditions and on less fertile soil. It was developed through conventional breeding in 1995 which contains vitamins, calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Zinc, Potassium as well as minerals and also act as antioxidants in human body, which is capable of reducing Vitamin A deficiency diseases in developing and low income countries in Africa including Nigeria.

Dr. Afuape added that the Orange Fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) grows in tropical and subtropical areas and was recognized as the seventh most important food crop in the world.  According to him, "Nigeria was the third largest producer of potato in the world after China and Uganda with an annual production estimated at 3.9 Million metric tons per year, hence the need to utilize it availability.

Other dignitaries present at the event includes: the President/CEO of the Consumer Advocacy for Food Safety and Nutrition Initiative (CAFSANI), Prof. Olugbenga Ogunmoyela, Engr. Emmanuel Onuora; President premium Bread Makers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Dayo Bello (GLOBALSITE), as well as the Ag. General Manager Sano Foods, Mr. Solomon Ojeleye.
