Wine is a product of the alcoholic fermentation of grapes consumed virtually by most people all over the world.  Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO) have been able to product wines from other local fruits other than grape and including honey were used totally to replace grape in wine production.  Wines have been produced from locally available fruits such as pineapple, mangoes and citrus fruits etc, vegetables such as water melon and carrots and flowers such as Hibiscus (calyx of red and white).  Wines have been produced from single fruits or mixture of fruits.  Due to the rapid growth of this industry, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) found it necessary to elaborate wine standards in order to ensure quality and fair practice in the industry.

The alcohol contents of the table wines produced ranged from 8%-14%.
