Rice husk was ashed at temperature of 600oC to maximize the availability of the silica content. The ashed residue was washed with 3% HCl, reacted with 0.8M NaOH solution to produce sodium silicate under constant agitation at temperature of 70°C. The results of chemical analysis of sodium silicate from rice husk showed %Na2O, %SiO2 and %H2O as 3.1%, 80.63% and 16.27% respectively. Application of FIIRO produced sodium silicate as a soap hardener exhibited good characteristic properties in terms of pH and harding property when compared with commercial sodium silicate. Conversion of this agro-waste to value added chemicals will reduce the pollution load in our environment and also aid in alleviation of poverty in our country.
