Hypertension is a medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. About 90-95% of cases have no obvious underlying medical condition. Emerging evidences identifies hypertension as a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally and it is projected that by the year 2025, about 75% of the world’s hypertensive population will be from developing countries. The objective of this project is to develop neutraceutical beverages that could be used in the management of hypertension taking into consideration the cost of importation of drugs and also the toxicological effects of traditional herbal concoctions. The plant materials identified include Peperomia pellucid, Hibiscus sabdariffa and Cyperus esculentus. The first phase of the project which includes the evaluation of the hypotensive activity of the identified extracts was carried out using albino rats of wistar strain. Results obtained shows that normal rat blood pressure ranging between 86/72mmHg and 110/80mg/Hg was reduced to a range of 76/64mm/Hg and 76/62mmHg. The observed activity was both concentration and dose-dependent. Thus the extracts under study possess could antihypertensive activites, thus correlating with earlier reports of other researchers.
